ABOUT ABOUT

The Betsy's Yiddish Speakers' Salon returns for the season!

Join Czarny and Chapnick when they present Yiddish Music: Their songs still resonate within us today at the Betsy's Yiddish Speakers' Salon on September 17th, 2017.  Various contemporary and spiritual themes will be introduced through the vehicle of Yiddish music.  You will hear new music, learn a new song and understand how the Yiddish musicians and poets still speak to us. It is a program that speaks to both the intellect and the soul.

Czarny and Chapnick have been collaborating since 2015 to present the subject of Yiddish from a very unique perspective.  Audiences leave their presentations with a greater understanding how Yiddish is still relevant to Jewish life today, both collectively and individually. Czarny and Chapnick do not dwell on the nostalgic or the kitschy.

Alejandra Czarny is Music Director of the Jewish School at Temple Sinai of Hollywood. She is a music therapist, educator and performer of Yiddish music, which she was introduced to as lullabies as her Polish-Jewish parents rocked her in the cradle. By the time she immigrated to the US from her hometown in Argentina, 15 years ago, Ms. Czarny had a full repertoire of Yiddish songs, including some  nostalgic wedding ones and especially the rich, eclectic, rare ones. Ms. Czarny recorded three CDs (Songs About Songs,  Under the White Stars and Viene siendo tiempo). She composes melodic and unique music to the lyrics of Yiddish poets, such as Itzik Manger and Izi (Israel) Kharik. In Argentina, she hosted her own Yiddish radio program. Ms. Czarny performs at local, national and international venues and festivals.

Saul Chapnick has submerged himself during the past twenty-five years studying Jewish life in interwar Europe with a focus on learning what was lost when this 1000 year old community vanished. In visiting Eastern Europe many timed and talking to politicians, survivors, scholars and Jewish communal leaders, Mr. Chapnick uncovered the richness and tragedy of interwar Jewish life in Europe. The poets and musicians of this vibrant era reflect this period’s ethos, pathos, and politics. Mr. Chapnick will show how their story is also our story.

Valet parking available for $20 per car, up to 4 hours.

The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
