Meet members of the Amernet Quartet and Composer Jeffery Briggs join to talk about The (New) Beethoven Quartets. Poet Ed Winstead joins to make the conversation interdisciplinary! Presented with FIU MBUS and FIU Department of Music. Presented as part of the weekly Meet the Artist Series with a wine & cheese reception.

ABOUT THE AMERNET STRING QUARTET: The Amernet String Quartet has garnered recognition as one of today’s exceptional string quartets and is Ensemble-in-Residence at Florida International University in Miami. Strad Magazine recently described the Amernet as “…a group of exceptional technical ability.” The Amernet Quartet (Jason Calloway, Michael Klotz, Misha Vitenson, and Franz Felkl) will present the complete opus of The (New) Beethoven Quartets which includes 98 movements of music transcribed by composer, Jeffery L. Briggs -  in Miami Beach, in 10 concerts over 3 years, 2016-19.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Dr. Jeffery L. Briggs (born March 10, 1957) holds a Doctorate in Musical Composition and Theory from the University of Illinois, Master in Music from Memphis University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Composition and Theory from the Eastman School of Music. Briggs' composition teachers included Samuel Adler, Warren Benson, Joseph Schwantner, Donald Freund, and John Melby. Jeff was awarded the Bernard and Rose Sernoffsky and Louis Lane Prizes for Music Composition at the Eastman School of Music, the Haimsohm Prize for Musical Composition at the University of Memphis, an ASCAP Award, and a MacDowell Colony Fellowship. Briggs has had a dual career writing music for acoustic instruments and computer games with more than 50 published titles including the original theme music for the game Civilization. 

ABOUT ED WINSTEAD: I’m a graduate of The College of William & Mary and received an MFA in Fiction from New York University, where I was a Goldwater Fellow and taught creative writing. I’m a Senior Editor at Guernica Magazine, and have worked at Public Books, the New Yorker, and Simon & Schuster. Originally from North Carolina, I’m currently based in Brooklyn, New York.
