ABOUT THE COMPOSERS

Born in Cuba, Al Torrente came to this country at age eleven and grew up in Miami, playing in bands as a guitar and trumpet player. After graduating from the University of Miami with a Theory and Composition degree, he taught at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, teaching Composition and Arranging. Al received a Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music in Jazz Composition. Currently Al is a Band Director in Westchester, NY. Both of Al's pieces were written for the South Beach Chamber Ensemble.

Three-time Grammy nominated American composer Miguel del Aguila was born 1957 in Montevideo, Uruguay. In more than 100 works that couple drama and driving rhythm with nostalgic nods to his South American roots, he has established himself as one of the most distinctive and highly regarded composers of his generation.

Osvaldo Golijov grew up in an Eastern European Jewish household in La Plata, Argentina. Born to a piano teacher mother and physician father, Golijov was raised surrounded by classical chamber music, Jewish liturgical and klezmer music, and the new tango of Astor Piazzolla. After studying piano at the local conservatory and composition with Gerardo Gandini he moved to Israel in 1983, where he studied with Mark Kopytman at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy and immersed himself in the colliding musical traditions of that city. Upon moving to the United States in 1986, Golijov earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with George Crumb, and was a fellow at Tanglewood, studying with Oliver Knussen.
