The Betsy Writer's Room and FIU welcome writer and Lawrence Sanders Award in Fiction 2016 Recipient, Tim O’Brien, to the Miami literary community with a light breakfast and candid conversation.

Tim O'Brien is from small town Minnesota. Graduation in 1968 from Macalester College found him with a BA in Political Science and a draft notice. O'Brien was against the war, but reported for service and was sent to Vietnam. After Vietnam, he became a graduate student at Harvard. Having the opportunity to do an internship at the Washington Post, he eventually left Harvard to become a newspaper reporter. O'Brien won the 1979 National Book Award for Going After Cacciato. His novel In the Lake of the Woods won the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for Best Historical Fiction in 1995. In August 2012, O'Brien received the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation's Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award. In June 2013, O'Brien was awarded the $100,000 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award and has been selected for the Lawrence Sanders Award in Fiction from Florida International University for 2016. Tim O'Brien is now a visiting professor and endowed chair at Southwest Texas State University where he teaches in the Creative Writing Program. He is on the advisory board for The Ridenhour Prizes.
