Come hear the powerful, creative voices of tomorrow.

Join us for a special night with students from Miami Arts Charter, presenting their works of literature with the guidance and direction of poet and teacher Jen Karetnick, co-founder of SWWIM (Supporting Women Writers in Miami, and Ariel Lewis, writer and educator.  Open to the community, but your RSVP is requested.

PARTICIPATING STUDENTS:

Danelle Antelo is a senior at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. From the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, she was awarded the prestigious New York Life Foundation Award, the American Voices Medal, and a Gold Medal for memoir, as well as Silver Medals for Poetry and her Senior Portfolio. The Foundation for Excellence in Education recently selected Danelle as one of 25 recipients (out of 650 applicants) for the Arts for Life! Scholarship, which will be presented by Jeb and Columbia Bush at the Arsht Center in June. Danelle has been published in several national anthologies and literary journals including Rattle, The Odet and the Orange Island Review. 

Michelle Cedeno is a senior in the Creative Writing program at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. She has been honored with the Foyle Poets of the Year award, a Silver Key for her Senior Portfolio from Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, an Honorable Mention from the Jack London Writing Competition and more. She also enjoys dancing and acting.

Eddy Elguezabal is currently enrolled as a senior in Creative Writing program at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. He has received many honors from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, including a Silver Key for his Senior Portfolio, and has also been published by the Orange Island Review and The Apprentice Writer. He enjoys learning about different forms of poetry, and using those skills to compose his own pieces.

Marina Ellis has been published by Canvas, Open Minds Quarterly, Poetry Matters, Colorism Healing, Literature Wales, ZO, Austin International Poetry Foundation, and World Enough Writers. Marina has been awarded two Gold Medals and one Silver Medal from Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. She took first place in Florida’s 2014 Promising Young Writer’s essay contest, second place in the National Federation of State Poetry Societies’ 2017 contest, and Honorable Mention in the 2016 Rider University High School Writing Competition and the 2015 Hollins’ University Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest. In her free time, Marina enjoys gardening and cooking family recipes.

Joel Enamorado is a senior in the Creative Writing program at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. He has been published by the “That’s So Miami” competition, Hypernova Lit, di-vêrsé-city Austin International Youth Poetry Anthology (2015 and 2017), the Orange Island Review, and the Apprehension Magazine. He has also won Silver Keys, including one for his Senior Portfolio, in the Scholastics Art & Writing Awards, and took third place in the junior photography category of the 2017 Sprayregen Family Foundation High School Art Contest. He does his own freelance photography and visual art. 

Sophya Giudici-Juarez is a senior in the Creative Writing program at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. She has been published by The Nation and in Rattle, as well as in several poetry anthologies. She was commended by The New York Times, and has participated in a number of poetry slams, including the national event Brave New Voices. She has been featured in a televised interview on Telemundo's “Ninos Heroes” segment. She has received three Gold Keys from Scholastic Art & Writing, including one for her Senior Portfolio, several Silver Keys, and a national Gold Medal for a collection of poems. She is excited for the future and looking forward to all new opportunities.

Alexa Gonzalez is a senior at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. She has won two Gold Keys and 4 Silver Keys, including one for her Senior Portfolio, from Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. She has been published in The National School’s Project Young American Poetry Digest, Hypernova Lit, BANG! Anti-Violence Anthology, and in the di-vêrsé-city Austin International Youth Poetry Anthology. She has been writing since she was 9 years old. She enjoys fiction and nonfiction, and plans on majoring in History and minoring in Film at Nova Southeastern University.

Daniela Gutierrez a senior at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. She lives in Miami, Florida with her mother and sister. She is passionate about literature and history and hopes she can mix those both into whatever career she chooses. She has been internationally published in multiple journals and anthologies such as The Odet, Orange Island Review, and Dylan's Great Poem, and honored for a poem by Poetry Matters. She has also earned several Gold and Silver Keys Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, including a Gold Key for her Senior Portfolio.

Naomi Jeanpierre owns a bookshelf that threatens to collapse because of  owning too many novels, but she insists on piling more  anyway. She has been published in Canvas, The Apprentice Writer, and Chataqua, and performed as a finalist in Piano Slam at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Naomi has also been awarded one national Gold Medal and one Silver Medal from Scholastic Art & Writing Awards; won second place in Poetry Matters; and was honored with Honorable Mentions in the 2016 Colorism Healing Poetry Contest amd the 2016 “Storytellers of Tomorrow” contest from Ringling College. She doodles on a sketchbook and reads novels in her spare time.

A Dominican Republic native, Lissette Lendeborg is a senior senior in the Creative Writing program at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. Her poetry has been published by Poetry Matters, di-vêrsé-city Austin International Youth Poetry Anthology, and Orange Island Review. She has been awarded by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards with Gold Keys, including one for her Senior Portfolio, at the regional level, and a Silver Medal at the national level. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts recognized and awarded her as a playwright in their 2017 VSA Playwright Discovery Program. Lissette hopes to pursue Creative Writing after high school and continue to grow in her efforts.

Angeles Parada is a senior at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. She immigrated to the United States in 2012 from Venezuela and now makes Miami her home. She has received six Silver Keys, including one for her portfolio, from the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. She was one of the 2017 VSA Playwright Discovery Program winners and obtained a third place in the 2017 Jack London Foundation Writing Competition. 

Elisa Silverstein is the extremely proud Creative Writing Student Council President at Miami Arts Charter School, Wynwood Campus. Recently she received a Silver Key from Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for her Senior Portfolio. In her free time, she enjoys writing and playing music.

The evening will begin with a performance by a string quartet under the direction of Aleksandar Djuric, musician and educator.
