ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ashley Teamer describes her work as a manifestation of black female liberation. She transforms WNBA players into super heroes searching abstract space for a new home that recognizes their greatness, skill, and perseverance. These women, finally able to liberate themselves from the heteronormative hierarchy of Earth, are embracing their future while destroying their past. Teamer views the complicated consciousness of her African-American existence through this landscape. Narratives by John Akomfrah and Octavia Butler have inspired her to create a world shaped by black excellence and freedom through collage, printmaking, painting, and stop-motion animation.
**ABOUT CULTURE BREAKS AT THE BETSY: Over the years, we have explored a variety of convening models as part of our Writer’s Room Program: from Breakfast Salons and Luncheon Roundtables to formal and informal readings - all with lots of success. This year we're exploring something brand new. We're proud to introduce The Betsy's Culture Break Artist Talks. This will be our lead creative convening model for the 2017-18 season, featuring visiting artists, as well as creatives from the greater Miami community. Coffee will be served and culture will be flowing.
